The city of Ocoee has a long and interesting history, starting with Dr. J.D. Starke who, while stricken with malaria, led a group of slaves, similarly stricken, to the north side of Lake Apopka in search of clean water to avoid any further malaria outbreaks. Following the Civil War, Ocoee's population increased even further when Confederate soldiers and their families settled into the area, including such well knowns as Captain Bluford Sims and General William Temple Withers. The former received a land grant for a 74-acre parcel to the west of Starke Lake in 1883 in what is now the downtown part of Ocoee. Then in 1886 Captain Sims rallied to have the town named Ocoee, after a river he grew up near in Tennessee. The name 'Ocoee' come from a Cherokee Indian word anglicized from uwagahi, meaning "apricot vine place". Ocoee also has some beautiful residential homes and great commercial properties.
